- A unique event to create awareness and communicate with women prisoners with the theme “Openly on Periods”
To dispel social hesitation and misconceptions about menstruation and to raise awareness about women’s health and hygiene, Menstrual Hygiene Day was celebrated on Thursday at the Central Jail in Jagdalpur. Organized under the joint auspices of the Bharat Scouts and Guides District Association, Bastar, and UNICEF, this special program was based on the theme “Openly Talking About Periods.”
Approximately 150 women prisoners participated in the program. The women initially felt hesitant and hesitant about the topic, but as the conversation progressed, the atmosphere became more intimate and comfortable. The Guide Captain and District Secretary discussed menstruation in a sensitive manner, connecting it to women’s daily lives and health, which encouraged the women to express themselves openly.
Meanwhile, female prisoner Padma shared her first menstrual experience and her mental state at the time in Gondi. Following her experience, other women also showed courage and openly discussed the physical problems, social stigma, and family challenges they face during menstruation. This dialogue made the program deeply emotional and inspiring.

Speakers pointed out that menstruation isn’t just a topic for women, but men’s awareness and sensitivity are equally important. If men in families and society understand this issue, women will find a more supportive and positive environment during these times.
District Organization Commissioner Mr. Dasru Yadav also provided the female prisoners with essential information regarding precautions to be taken during menstruation, personal hygiene, and health. At the closing ceremony, District Training Commissioner Mr. JP Pathak expressed his gratitude to the jail administration and district administration for organizing such a sensitive and educational event.
It is noteworthy that this awareness campaign, run by the Bharat Scouts and Guides District Association, Bastar, and UNICEF, is continuously expanding. As part of this campaign, an open discussion on menstrual hygiene was organized among youth at the “Nai Udaan” summer camp on May 27th.
