- Emergency lobectomy surgery successful, removing the infected lung, providing relief from the disease
- Successful surgery using cutting-edge lung stapler technology
The Department of Heart, Chest and Vascular Surgery at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, Raipur, performed a highly complex and life-saving surgery, successfully saving the life of a 25-year-old man. The patient had been suffering from a serious cough with blood for a long time. The condition had become so severe that he was coughing up approximately 50 to 70 ml of blood each time he coughed. According to doctors, if the operation had not been performed in time, the patient could have died due to excessive bleeding.
Dr. Krishnakant Sahu, Head of the Heart, Chest and Vascular Surgery Department of the hospital, said that most of the chest and lung operations are being performed with advanced technology in the Heart, Chest and Vascular Surgery Department of Ambedkar Hospital. A 25-year-old youth, resident of Chataud near Abhanpur, had been complaining of cough with blood in phlegm for the last 10 years. Initially, this problem was mild, but it was continuously increasing for the last one month. In the last few days, the condition became more serious and every time he coughed, excessive amount of blood started coming out.
The patient had previously taken TB medications and consulted several major hospitals for treatment, but found no relief. During the investigation, a CT scan was performed, which confirmed a large cavity in the lower lobe of the right lung and a fungal infection called aspergilloma. This condition is commonly seen in patients with TB.

After examining the CT scan report, Dr. Sahu explained that immediate surgery was necessary to save the patient’s life. This surgical procedure, medically known as a lobectomy (removal of the lower lobe of the right lung), involves cutting out the infected part of the lung. This operation is considered extremely complex and high-risk, as it carries the risk of damaging the major blood vessels of the lungs—the pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein.
After obtaining the family’s consent, the patient underwent an emergency operation the very next day. The surgery utilized cutting-edge lung stapler gun technology, reducing the risk of postoperative complications such as air leaks. Following the successful surgery, the patient’s condition improved rapidly, and he was discharged from the hospital within a few days, fully recovered. The entire treatment was provided free of charge under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana (Ayushman Bharat Yojana).
Dr. Sahu explained that coughing up blood is medically known as hemoptysis. Its main causes include pulmonary tuberculosis, lung cancer, pulmonary AV malformation, bronchitis, and other serious lung diseases.
Dr. Vivek Chaudhary, Dean of Pandit Nehru Medical College, said, “The team of doctors, through a coordinated effort, performed a successful, timely surgery, giving the patient a new lease on life. In the future, our institution is committed to providing patients with improved, accessible, and advanced healthcare services.”
Dr. Santosh Sonkar, Medical Superintendent of Ambedkar Hospital, says that the hospital management has been continuously striving to provide high-quality, free treatment to needy patients through the Ayushman Yojana, and we are achieving success in this direction. Currently, many patients are benefiting from this scheme.
