From kitchen to ‘Lakhpati Didi’, Sasikala from Sarangarh changed her destiny with a flour mill.

When courage is high and government schemes are supported, then the sky of success can be touched even by leaving the village paths.

This is not a film story, but the story of struggle and self-respect of Shashikala Sahu of Sarangarh-Bilaigarh, which has today made her a role model for hundreds of women in the area.

  • When the roar of a millionaire sister echoed from the stage

The Good Governance Camp in Bhikhampura fell silent when Shashikala Sahu of the Bilaigarh area took the stage with a microphone. Her eyes reflected yesterday’s struggle and the sparkle of today’s success. As she began narrating her story, the eyes of every woman in the pandal lit up with hope. Shashikala proudly declared that women aren’t just meant to manage homes; if given the opportunity, they can become the engine of progress for society and the nation. Expressing gratitude to Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai’s government for her success, she said that today, the state government’s schemes are breaking the shackles from rural women’s feet and giving them wings.

  • That period of hardship and the support of the morning

Until a few years ago, Sasikala’s life wasn’t easy. Her family’s financial situation was dire. Her biggest worry every morning was how to make ends meet. But Sasikala wasn’t one to give up.

In 2019, a new dawn dawned in her life when she joined the National Rural Livelihood Mission (Bihan). As soon as she joined the group, she realized that a drop fills the ocean. She began small savings and dreamed of standing on her own two feet.

  • A loan of one lakh rupees and a revolution through a flour mill

Shashikala mustered up the courage and took a loan of 1 lakh rupees from the bank to start a small flour mill. Initially, people wondered how a woman could operate a mill. But Shashikala worked day and night. With the sound of the mill’s clatter, her fortunes began to turn. Her business grew, her income increased, and the first thing Shashikala did was repay her bank loan.

  • The flight was still pending: Becoming a multi-tasking businesswoman

Once she tasted success, Sasikala’s dreams grew even bigger. She refused to limit herself to just grinding wheat. She secured another loan of Rs 2 lakh from the Cluster Level Federation (CLF).

This time, she entered the field with an even bigger vision. She purchased separate processing units and modern machinery for pulses, wheat, and oilseeds. Sasikala, once a mere housewife, had now become the owner of a complete processing unit. Sasikala took her first loan of 1 lakh rupees. She purchased new machinery with an additional loan of 2 lakh rupees to expand her business, earning a net saving of around 15,000 rupees per month and earning an annual profit of over 1.5 lakh rupees, making her a Lakhpati Didi.

  • A new chapter of change

In rural Chhattisgarh, lakhpati didis like Shashikala Sahu are living examples of women’s empowerment, proving that rural India is changing. The hands that only asked for help yesterday are now commanding machines to provide a better future for their entire families. Shashikala’s story is an inspiration for every woman who wants to write her own destiny.
