Farmer Mahesh Kashyap’s fortunes changed with modern horticulture techniques

Mr. Mahesh Kashyap, a resident of Cachar in the Bilha development block of Bilaspur district in Chhattisgarh, has become a source of inspiration for other farmers in the area. Once troubled by the rising costs and declining profits of traditional farming, Mahesh, with the help of the Horticulture Department, embraced modern agriculture and radically improved his financial situation.

  • The journey from traditional farming to modernity

Mr. Kashyap previously relied on traditional crops, but the Horticulture Department’s Integrated Horticulture Development Scheme transformed his thinking and farming methods. Under the department’s guidance, he developed an advanced model for vegetable production, leveraging a grant for planting and fencing a 200-hectare area.

  • Unparalleled integration of technology

Mr. Kashyap adopted scientific techniques on his farm. Drip irrigation not only saved water but also provided precise crop nutrition and reduced weed problems. Mulching was effectively used to retain soil moisture and prevent soil erosion. The use of vermicompost and organic fertilizers increased crop quality and productivity.

  • Doubling of income and record production

Mahesh cultivated pumpkin and other seasonal vegetables as intercrops alongside eggplant. He cultivated eggplant on approximately 4.5 acres. He estimated the production to be 900 to 1100 quintals. While the cultivation cost approximately 7 to 8 lakh rupees, he generated a net profit of 14 to 15 lakh rupees from the sale of the vegetables.

  • A role model for farmers in the region

Today, Mahesh Kashyap has not only become self-reliant, but he is also spreading the message to farmers that by taking advantage of government schemes and adopting modern technologies, agriculture can become a profitable business. This initiative by the Horticulture Department is writing a new chapter of prosperity in the rural areas of Bilaspur.
