Local General/By-elections May 2026:

  • 240 candidates are contesting in urban bodies and 392 in three-tier panchayats.
  • Poll preparations complete

Under the election program released by the Chhattisgarh State Election Commission, after the completion of the process of scrutiny, scrutiny and withdrawal of nomination papers for the general/by-elections of urban bodies and three-tier Panchayats going on in the state, the final list of candidates has been released. According to the detailed data released by the Commission, a total of 240 candidates will contest in the urban bodies and a total of 392 candidates will contest in the three-tier Panchayats.

Under the three-tier Panchayat elections, a total of 1136 posts were reserved for the post of Panch, in which no nomination was received for 385 posts and nominations were rejected for 4 posts. Unopposed elections were held for 640 posts, while voting will be held for the remaining 107 posts, for which a total of 246 candidates are in the fray. Out of a total of 82 posts for the post of Sarpanch, no nominations were received for 30 posts and 3 nominations were rejected. Unopposed elections were held for 15 posts and voting will be held for the remaining 34 posts, where a total of 105 candidates are contesting the elections. Similarly, unopposed elections will be held for all the 10 posts of District Member and a total of 41 candidates are in the fray for these posts.
Voting will be held for a total of 71 councilor positions in the urban body elections. A total of 221 candidates are contesting for these positions. Elections will also be held for five chairperson positions, for which a total of 19 candidates have filed nominations. No nominations were rejected for these positions, nor was any election held unopposed.

Chhattisgarh State Election Commission Secretary Shikha Rajput Tiwari has informed that elections for urban bodies will be conducted through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and elections for three-tier Panchayats will be conducted through ballot boxes. First Level Checking (FLC) of voting machines will begin on May 29, 2026, for which all necessary preparations have been completed.

Chhattisgarh State Election Commissioner Ajay Singh, reiterating his commitment to conduct peaceful, fair, and transparent elections, has directed district election officers to ensure security and basic facilities at polling stations in areas with contested elections. The Commission has also issued instructions to make adequate arrangements for shade, drinking water, and other essential amenities for voters at polling stations, keeping the weather in mind.
