- Muchukunda Rishi’s ashram in Mandagiri will become Chhattisgarh’s new tourist hub.
The Mandagiri Mountains located in Mechka hold special significance in the natural and spiritual heritage of the forested Nagari (Sihawa) region of Dhamtari district. The ascetic site of sage Muchukunda, located on a mekhla-shaped hill near Mechka village in the Nagari development block, is known as a wonderful confluence of faith, spirituality, and nature.
The Mandagiri Mountains, located in the Nagari (Sihawa) forest region of Dhamtari district in Chhattisgarh, are soon poised to establish themselves as a major center for religious, nature, and adventure tourism (trekking) in the state. Located on Mekhalakar Hill near Mechaka village, this sacred place of penance of the legendary sage Muchukunda is being developed to attract not only devotees but also tourists.
- Mythological importance and natural beauty

According to mythology, Muchukunda Maharaja was the son of King Mandhata of the Ikshvaku dynasty. This site, associated with his penance after the battle between gods and demons, enriches the spiritual heritage of the “Saptarishi Tapobhoomi” of the Sihawa-Nagari region. Beautiful ponds, ancient statues, and temples dedicated to deities, including Mother Sita, are located on Mandagiri Mountain. Furthermore, the hilltop offers a panoramic view of the Sondhur Dam and the vast forest area, making it an excellent destination for trekking enthusiasts.
The Dhamtari Collector stated that considering the spiritual and natural potential of Mandagiri, a comprehensive development plan is being developed. Basic amenities such as access roads, sanitation, drinking water, and security will be assessed for the site. Along with preserving religious beliefs, trekking and adventure spots will be identified. Additionally, tourism in the forest region will increase local community participation and create new employment opportunities. Located approximately 27 kilometers east of the city, this site will emerge prominently on the state’s eco-tourism and pilgrim tourism map in the future.
